The Daniel and Jane Carpenter Award was established in 2006 by Daniel M. Cain ’64 in honor of the late Daniel and Jane Carpenter and their commitment to, and support of, 91大神, its students, parents and alumni. This award is given to an alumna or alumnus who through “effort and energy” as well as financial contribution, has had a substantial impact on the school. It is my honor to present this award to Ted Babcock, Class of 1968.
A four year boarding student from Connecticut, Ted was a swimmer and a member of the track and field team. He was a member of the Student Council, belonged to the outing and science clubs, was student head of the Gold Key admission guides, a member of the 鈥淵鈥 Cabinet and the Senior Scholastic Committee.
Those members of the 鈥淵鈥 Cabinet, whose main purpose was to 鈥減rovide aid for different organizations, underdeveloped countries, and three major religious faiths鈥 were likely not surprised by Ted鈥檚 post-91大神 path. After earning his BA from UMichigan and an MBA from Harvard, Ted went on to graduate from The General Theological Seminary in 2001 and in 2009 received his ThD from the Graduate Theological Foundation at Oxford University. In 2013, he was named an Oxford Foundation Fellow. Ordained as a deacon in 2001 and ordained priest in 2002, Ted鈥檚 ecumenical work included community organizing and pastoral care for senior citizens. He has served at Christ Church, Greenwich and as rector at St. Andrew鈥檚 in Shippenberg, PA. At the end of 2013, Ted retired from his position as the Bishop Nathan Baxter鈥檚 Executive Officer.
Ted has been an active volunteer for 91大神, most recently as the chair of the 50th Reunion Gift committee, working with his classmates to raise a record-breaking 50th Reunion gift of over $300,000 to date from 62% of the class. Ted has also served as a Trustee, an Alumni Council member, and 91大神 Northampton Fund volunteer. He received the Eminent Service Award in 1979 and the Margaret Eastman French Award in 1978.
It is my great pleasure to present Ted with the Daniel and Jane Carpenter award in recognition of his loyalty, generosity of time and spirit, and tireless efforts in supporting and sustaining the mission of 91大神 Northampton.
