Virtual Play Highlights Humanity

鈥檚 current play was written before 2020, before social distancing, quarantining, masks鈥攂efore phased re-opening and scaling back and re-opening again. Before the tumult of emotions that have been a constant part of life for nearly five months. But, like all powerful art, the work, Lou (an unintentional search for friendship), feels prescient, almost comically necessary.

鈥淚 like to find where sad and funny meet,鈥 Spagnola, a 2010 91大神 graduate, said of his new play, a segment of which, called 鈥淵ou and Me and the Space Between,鈥 will be performed, virtually on July 26.

Starring Mark Feuerstein (whose television credits include 鈥淭he West Wing鈥 and 鈥淩oyal Pains鈥) and Michaela Watkins (鈥淐asual,鈥 鈥淪aturday Night Live鈥), Spagnola鈥檚 play centers on Lou, a struggling stand-up comic 鈥渨ho performs mostly at old folks homes,鈥 and Shirley, a greeting card writer. The two meet on a dating app for people looking for long-distance relationships.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not quarantine-specific, but it鈥檚 about loneliness,鈥 Spagnola, 28, said.

Where the Brooklyn-based writer sees the play (and the segment) resonating more with our current state is in what he calls his 鈥渓owercase p political鈥 drive to make people look inward, through uncomfortable laughter, at the way they interact and treat others. Especially in strange, trying times like these, Spagnola finds the 鈥渓ittle gestures鈥 of humanity so important.

鈥淚f someone sees this and even for half a day thinks about how they treat someone at the post office or the grocery store,鈥 he feels the humanity behind his work will have shown through.

Spagnola said although he doesn鈥檛 set out to write comedies, his plays all end up that way.

鈥淚 just think comedy allows you to talk about serious issues without actually talking about them. If you make [the audience] feel uncomfortable, expose [their] insecurities, what we鈥檙e nervous about 鈥 that鈥檚 why we laugh. I like bringing people together.鈥

That search for the humanity in humor stretches back to Spagnola鈥檚 time on campus, especially his senior spring. When students are typically focused on graduation and the summer, Spagnola took Writers鈥 Workshop, did an independent study in playwriting, and took Emily Ditkovski鈥檚 playwriting course.

鈥淚t really opened my eyes to so much,鈥 he said, noting the freedom from traditional prose-bound constrictions he had felt in the past writing short stories, and his love of writing dialogue with cadences one might hear in a neighborhood coffee shop rather than an anthologized short story.

鈥淲hat I really love about plays is I don鈥檛 have to listen to the rules; it felt so freeing.鈥

Spagnola credits 91大神 with allowing him to focus so intently and specifically on fostering his love for the arts.

He felt 91大神 鈥渞eally allowed me to do what I thought, at the time, was whatever I wanted to do. It was really nice being a senior at a place that trusted me; I really appreciated being at a place where I could really lean in.鈥

Spagnola鈥檚 bona fides are numerous: he studied theater and playwriting at Hampshire College, worked at The Lark, a New-York based incubator for playwrights, wrote three pilot scripts at the UCLA Professional Program for Writing for Television, and has racked up accolades including a semifinal nod in the Eugene O鈥橬eill National Playwrights Conference for his play Little League. He cites Annie Baker, Sarah Ruhl, and Sam Hunter as major inspirations on his style, and for showing him what a play can be, 鈥渉ow they can look and sound different.鈥

But arguably his biggest influence comes from his day job as a kindergarten teacher.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the most fun job I can imagine,鈥 he said.

His play Little League, he explained was 鈥渢otally cherrypicked鈥 from talking to parents about parenting, reading books on early childhood education, and being around kids for seven hours a day.

That familiarity with working with small children is on display in his new work.

鈥淚鈥檓 used to conflict resolutions with four-year-olds,鈥 Spagnola said. In searching for kindness amid catastrophe, for open and honest and funny and sad dialogue, Spagnola said his work looks for 鈥渢he adult version of that.鈥
