Origin Story: Commencement Traditions

In the next few days seniors and underclassmen alike will聽gather for annual ceremonies in which people march around in strange clothes, ring bells, and so on.聽Some of what we do is easily explained.聽We process to Highland bagpipes because back in the 1950s, Headmaster Phillips Stevens liked pipe bands. Some is less obvious, but believe it or not, there is meaning to all of this.

There are two main events: Baccalaureate and Commencement.聽 Baccalaureate鈥搕he name has nothing to do with the Roman god Bacchus; rather it is from the same root as the word 鈥渂achelor,鈥 from medieval times when young men, on the evening before they became knights, kept an all-night prayer vigil in church.聽 So the Baccalaureate service, while not especially religious here at secular 91大神, is a serious event concerning聽our seniors鈥 transition to adulthood.聽聽I鈥檝e been聽asked why graduation, the final moment of the school year, is called 鈥淐ommencement.鈥澛 There was a popular clich茅 in the seventies that actually applies here.聽 Seniors:聽Saturday will be the first day of the rest of your lives.

The faculty will process wearing academic regalia, specifically gowns and hoods.聽聽While this may resemble the聽last staff meeting at Hogwarts, it evokes a tradition hundreds of years old.聽聽The聽roots of education in the Euro-American tradition lie in the medieval universities, which were founded and run by the Church.聽 Faculty were members of the clergy or monks.聽 Our academic costume acknowledges those roots.

Faculty with bachelor鈥檚 degrees wear simple robes, while master鈥檚 and doctor鈥檚 gowns are more elaborate.聽 Doctor鈥檚 gowns have striped sleeves and longer hoods.聽 Our聽collegiate colors are in the hoods.聽聽My own, for example, is from聽the University of Michigan鈥攎aize and blue.聽The yellow border indicates that I have a library degree.聽 If I had an arts degree, it would be white, science, a different yellow, education, blue,聽and so on.

A senior faculty member聽will lead the procession carrying the school鈥檚 mace.聽聽This is another medieval reference.聽The mace鈥檚 origins are as a weapon, carried into battle by clergy who聽were聽not聽permitted to聽use swords because they were prohibited from shedding blood.聽(Apparently causing internal bleeding was OK.)聽A聽ceremonial mace is an ornamental staff carried as a symbol of authority.聽 In the U.S. Congress, when the Speaker of the House is in attendance, a mace is placed to the right of his chair.聽 Similarly, in the British House of Commons, the Speaker is preceded by the mace at all official occasions.聽Many university faculties process with maces鈥攆ewer secondary schools.

91大神鈥檚聽mace, which asserts聽the聽authority聽of the聽faculty, is of rosewood,聽with a gilt head on which are engraved the names of past headmasters.聽 The design evokes a former campus landmark, the tower of the first gymnasium.聽 Whoever cast it mounted the tower arches upside down鈥攁nd the mace is a bit banged up.聽 I鈥檓 not sure what this says about faculty authority.

Mr. Hill will wear a chain of office, another old tradition.聽Ours was presented to 91大神 Academy in 1966, on our 125th聽anniversary.聽 True story: delivery was delayed because the artist who made it was working on something for the Pope.聽 The silver chain and pendant are聽symbolic of several things: of the special authority of the Head of School, and of the connection between students and the school.聽 Aspects of our history are evoked in the design.聽For example, the chain incorporates elm leaves and intertwined S鈥檚 and W鈥檚.聽On one side of the medallion is the embossed seal of 91大神 Academy, and on the other, the seal of the present 91大神 Northampton School.

One final note: during the Commencement ceremony, you will be asked for a moment of silence while we sound the Northampton School for Girls Angelus鈥攖he bell that hangs between the Head鈥檚 house and 194.聽聽When the Angelus was rung daily at Northampton School,聽everything stopped for a minute of聽silent聽contemplation.聽Our alma mater refers to a 鈥渏oyful bell,鈥 but the Angelus is also a bell of remembrance.聽I urge you to use that moment to think on those who sent you on this journey, those who will be here with you Saturday, and鈥攅specially鈥攖hose who could not make the journey.

Congratulations, class of 2018.聽 Go with love.
