Kicking off the 2017-18 exhibit schedule at the Grubbs Gallery will be Holyoke-based painter聽. Auferoth uses oil paint and often resin and/or wax on wide stretches of paper or board, resulting in compositions that resemble flat horizons. Color palates differentiate each piece, as do the grades of hue in each stratum, and the subtle markings on each plane.
鈥淢y working method is a deliberate intellectual decision followed by intuitive color exploration,鈥 Auferoth notes on her website biography. 鈥淚 use an underlying grid of motion imagery which I layer with coats of translucent oil paint. This stills the composition at the surface while allowing movement to be present beneath the layers so the paintings hover between two narrow, luminous planes鈥攖he dynamic and the static.鈥
Auferoth鈥檚 paintings have been exhibited widely and will hang at the Grubbs Gallery September 1 through September 29, with a reception on September 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. The Grubbs Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public and is closed during school vacations.
