Several 91���� Northampton School students were recognized in this year’s Massachusetts Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, joining around 4,000 honorees across the Commonwealth in the competition’s regional division.

Simon Kim ’19 took two Silver Key awards for writing a humor piece, “The Declaration of Independence from the Atrocious Legacy of Homework: A Transcript,” and a poem, “Bouquet of Sonnets.” Keyu Lu ’20 took honorable mention for a digital art piece called “Her.” Sophia Schaefer ’18 won three Silver Key awards for writing: the memoir “In the Bosom,” a short story, “Shark’s Eye,” and a “flash fiction” piece called “Without Being Sad.” Glede Wang ’19 took two honorable mention awards for design (“Deer’s Dream”) and painting (“[He][She]”).

Since 1923, the national program has spotlighted exceptional work by artists and writers in grades 7 through 12, honoring the likes of Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, and Andy Warhol long before they were household names. The statewide competition, sponsored by the Boston Globe Foundation, is the longest-running partnership with Scholastic’s national program. It is in its 68th year. Congratulations to the winners!
