Athletic Department Awards Top Honors During 2024 Spring Athletics Assembly

As part of 91大神 Northampton’s end-of-year activities, the Athletics Department hold an assembly to honor our spring sports teams, and to award the department’s four highest honors: the boys and girls Athletic Leadership Awards, The George Denman Bowl鈥攁warded to the school’s top-performing male athlete鈥攁nd the Alumnae Bowl, given to the school’s top-performing female athlete.

This year’s Athletic Leadership Awards went to Anna Sawyer ’24 and Jeremy Dube ’24. Sawyer competed in a sport for all 18 of her seasons at 91大神鈥攂eginning as a seventh grader鈥攚hile earning 15 varsity letters and captaining three teams (field hockey, basketball, lacrosse) her senior year.

Dube was a two-sport athlete at 91大神, captaining the cross-country and track and field teams his senior season.

The Denman Bowl was awarded to James Elliot ’24. Elliott earned 13 varsity letters in his five years at 91大神. In his senior year, he rewrote the football program’s record books in receiving, setting new marks in receptions and touchdowns caught in a season and a career. He also earned All-NEPSAC honors in football his junior and senior seasons. He was a four-year letter-winner in basketball, and a four-year starter at shortstop in baseball, captaining the team this year.

The Alumnae Bowl was awarded to two athletes this year鈥擟amille Armaganian ’24 and Monique Lyons ’24. Armaganian was a three-sport captain as a senior. In the fall, she capped an incredible field hockey career with an All-NEPSAC selection, team MVP honors, and a team appearance in the NEPSAC tournament. Playing ice hockey in the winter, Armaganian played a role in leading the team back to its third-straight NEPSAC Elite Division championship game appearance, and on the lacrosse field Armaganian again showed her athletic prowess by being a key contributor to the program.

Lyons also played three sports. In the fall, she led the soccer team in scoring while earning All-NEPSAC honorable mention status. In the winter, she was an integral player in the team’s march to the Elite Division final, and goes down as the program’s all-time leading scorer; in addition, she earned All-NEPSAC and NEPSAC Player of the Year honors, and was honored by the Boston Bruins with the Carlton Award, given to the top male and female hockey players in Massachusetts. In the spring, Lyons was a four-year softball player, and earned All-NEPSAC honors as a senior as the Wildcats won the Western New England Class A tournament.

Below are the remarks given by Director of Athletics Mark Conroy during the ceremony. This ceremony also marked the final Athletic Awards assembly for Conroy, who is retiring at the end of the school year and is set for induction into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame this summer.

Both teams had terrific seasons, as they combined for 28 total wins during the spring. Amongst the varsity B highlights were victories over NMH, Pomfret, Westminster, Choate, and Deerfield.

The varsity A team would prove to be one of the top prep teams in New England again. A thrilling win over Northampton at home on Sawyer was one of our many highlights. The team returned to the NEPSUL championships in mid-May determined to defend its title. Big wins over previously undefeated St Sebastian鈥檚 and Wooster led to a showdown with Xavier from Middletown, CT.聽 Unfortunately, the team came up just short to finish runner-up. Led by Coaches Lonergan, Tabb-Wood and Channell, the varsity girls lacrosse team had an outstanding spring finishing their regular season with a record of 12-1 including going undefeated in May winning their final six games. This was a dominant team who outscored its opponents by an average of almost 10 goals a game. Convincing wins over NMH, Westminster, Berkshire and Middlesex highlighted their season.聽 Certainly one of their biggest highlights was a terrific 11-9 win over a strong Deerfield team on Sawyer Field. The team sent their seniors out on a high note on a beautiful early May evening when they defeated Choate convincingly 19-10. Late in the season the team traveled east to play Austin Prep in a night game. The team had a great game winning 14-6 and celebrating sophomore Scarlette Graybill scoring her 100th goal in less than two years in the program. She finished her sophomore year with 71 goals and 31 assists for 102 points.

Could I ask Scarlette to stand and be recognized for achieving this 100 goal milestone!

The team finished their season by competing in the Patriot Classic lacrosse tournament hosted by 91大神 this spring. In the semifinal game, the girls came out determined against a Berkshire team that we had beaten earlier in the spring this time winning 12-6 to set up a championship game with a very strong Canterbury team. Softball

Led by coaches Allison Marsland and Maggie Haas, JV softball fielded an enthusiastic team this spring that demonstrated great improvement. The highlights of their season were two thrilling wins over Westminster and Stoneleigh Burnham!

The varsity softball team was led this spring by coaches Kristi Stefanoni and Janine Whipple.聽 The team enjoyed a very competitive season finishing the regular season with a record of 8-5 including shutting out Deerfield 11-0, a terrific 5-2 win over an always tough Worcester team and two thrilling walk-off wins.聽 The first was a come from behind 5-4 win over a very good Choate team on lone senior Monique Lyons鈥檚 Senior Day and the second a 3-2 comeback win over Cheshire decided by Catie Putt鈥檚 RBI double in the bottom of the 7th.

I didn鈥檛 want to miss the opportunity to recognize one of our players who accomplished one of the rarest feats in all sports 鈥 a 鈥減erfect game鈥 when she didn鈥檛 allow a base runner in a shutout over Marianapolis. It is only the second perfect game thrown at 91大神 in the past 24 years!! Maggie Fay, can you please stand so we can applaud this great accomplishment?

The team鈥檚 strong regular season record earned them a berth in the Western New England Prep League鈥檚 Class A tournament and a rematch with rival Westminster who had beaten us the week before.聽 This time, behind a pitching gem by Maggie and Violet Carroll鈥檚 home run the girls turned the tables defeating the Martlets 10-0 at home advancing to the semi-finals and another rematch with Suffield who had also beaten us that week. In a familiar them, the girls did it again this time winning the game 2-0 on Violet Carroll鈥檚 second home run in two days and another pitching gem by Maggie Fay! This set up a game at Choate for the Class A title last Sunday. The girls played a tremendous game using the same formula鈥攁n error-free defense, timely hits including Violet鈥檚 third home run in three days and Maggie鈥檚 terrific pitching to take home the Class A league title 5-1! This was our first outright title since 2016 though we were co-champs in 2018.

Could I ask our captains Monique, Maggie and Violet to come forward to make a presentation?

For their outstanding play during the season, senior Monique Lyons and junior Violet Carroll were both named league to compete in the league all-star game while Violet and Maggie were both named All Western NE all stars. Girls Water Polo

To say that it was another wonderful season for girls鈥 water polo would be an understatement! Having said that, this was a very different season than last year when we dominated from start to finish. This year鈥檚 team had to overcome a fair amount of adversity, especially early on in the season when we lost the use of our pool for a stretch of time not to mention several top players! The mantra of the team was 鈥渄efense wins championships鈥 and they embraced it holding opponents to an average of 6 goals a game鈥攑retty remarkable! Unlike a year ago, the team was tested several times during the season particularly against Choate and Loomis, beating Choate 8-6 and 12-9 and very competitive games with Loomis winning 5-4 and 9-7! The girls kept leaning on their defense and scoring timely goals when needed. The team鈥檚 terrific season earned them the #1 seed in the NEPSAC tournament. In the semi-finals they defeated Loomis 9-5 and after being down 2-1 to Choate early in the final, the girls clamped down to win going away 10-2!聽 Incredibly this earned the girls their third NEPSAC title in a row and a current win streak of 39 games鈥攜es, remarkable!

Could I ask our team captains to come forward to make a presentation to Mr. Hill?

As expected, a number of girls garnered postseason individual recognition. Seniors Maisie Mattocks and Andie Kinstle were both named All NEPSAC, while three girls were named Honorable Mention: Lucy Hoyt, Mel McCullough and Abby Muscato. Two girls won major NEPSAC honors: Junior Juno Aselton was named the Most Outstanding Goalie for the third year in a row, and senior Hayden Hedstrom was named the NEPSAC Player of the Year!

Could I ask Juno and Hayden to come forward so we can recognize them?

Additionally, senior Maisie Mattocks finished her tremendous six year career here at 91大神 by etching her name into our record books setting two new school records鈥攎ost points in a season with 103 and most assists in a career with 91.

Could I have Maisie come forward so we can recognize her!

This year鈥檚 Denman recipient has been a significant contributor to our athletic program during his five years at 91大神.聽 A very rare three sport athlete in our boys program, he earned 13 letters during his five years at 91大神.聽 During the fall, he enjoyed a record breaking career rewriting the school record book by setting new marks for receptions and touchdowns caught in a season and career.聽 A team captain, he received prestigious All NEPSAC honors during both his junior and senior year. 聽In the winter, he earned four letters as a member of the basketball team.聽 In the spring, he was a four year starter at shortstop captaining the team this year while receiving numerous all league honors.聽 Beyond these outstanding accomplishments, he is widely considered by his coaches to be one of the finest athletes they have coached and an exceptional competitor and teammate.
